[ a short moment that may as well have lasted decades- the deed was easy, play along, eat the strawberry, move on. it's really impressive just how little of his brain he uses when they play this game, and how each and every time he never learns the only lesson to learn from all this: tamaki was far too weak when it came to sougo.
still, only quitters back down. sure, his palms are a little sweaty, and sure, his senses began to feel more and more heightened by the minute, with no help coming from his tendency to hyper fixate on anything that is sougo. none of that meant that he'd miss this chance. when sougo feeds him, he leans in again just in the slightest, slowly opening his mouth to welcome the treat- while he'd normally just take a huge bite and make a performance out of his delight, their tension results in something still quite new. ]
[Win? Since when was this a competition?! Tamaki's lack of flourish as he closes his lips around the fork makes it near impossible to follow up with any other sort of smooth line or gesture, and unable to shelve all of the nervousness swelling in his chest, all Sougo can do is gently pull the fork back and desperately hope that this rising tension between them doesn't become the next topic of conversation.]
Just for today.
[Glancing down at his own half-eaten slice of cake isn't much of a distraction, so he takes another small forkful for himself, meticulous and rather obviously drawn out to give himself time to think. But after a few moments pass, he suddenly suddenly seals his resolve, setting the fork down and looking up to Tamaki with the most collected expression he can manage (which, in truth, is still laced with nervousness and only accentuated by his mild flush).]
Tamaki-kun. This isn't... the only thing I have planned.
[ thank god that's over. there was no way he could've kept that act much longer... it's no wonder sougo's the smart one of the unit, knowing exactly how to diffuse bombs left and right.
turning back to his own plate, energetic devouring slows down to idle nibbling, coupled with a slow swing of his tail. the cake's good, really good. maybe he can persuade sougo into making some for him more often. being spoiled like this only once a year isn't nearly enough for how attention starved tamaki is for the remaining 364 days.
the clinking of the fork against the other's plate calls his attention, and he looks over to find sougo making what could only be described as that face.
man, what did he do now? is he going to get punished for teasing him? was it not over? ]
Uh... R-really? Look, Sou-chan. Don't get mad, okay? I'll let you win, really!
Mad? No, I'm not upset at all. This is something different.
[It figures that trying to put up a front would only muddle what he's trying to get across, and barely furrowing his brows, his weak facade fades into what can't be called anything but quiet nervousness.]
A cake alone isn't much of a present, so I... I have something else for you.
[ PHEW. the last thing he needed was another storm brewing on his birthday, of all days. this was a much more pleasant outcome. exciting, even. to see sougo so flustered over it too, well... this was bound to be good. was it more sweets? a new game? clothes? he really didn't have to go so far, but tamaki wasn't about to turn any of that down! ]
It's fine, I really liked the cake. What did you get me, though? Is it wrapped?
No, it isn't something that can be wrapped. But if you follow me, I can show you.
[Proper and meticulous as Sougo may be, he's hardly about to insist that they clean up and put their dishes away before doing anything else. Instead, he simply stands up and pushes his chair in, gesturing for Tamaki to follow him to his room.
Of course, given that he's been planning this all along, everything's been set up properly: Both computer monitors at his workstation are open to the mixing programs that Tamaki is likely very familiar with by now, and the waveforms and multiple tracks make it clear that Sougo's been hard at work composing something. The main difference from usual is that he's swiveled his chair and set up his keyboard to face away from the programs... to face Tamaki, who Sougo guides toward the side of his bed.]
[ so it's not something that can be wrapped... what is it, then? the more the plot thickens, the more question marks that pop around tamaki's head. curious, he follows sougo's instructions-- only eyeing the dirty dishes through the corner of his eyes. so it was something so important that even someone like sougo would neglect chores for... hm.
he was familiar with sougo's room, no matter how much he preferred his own-- mixing work and personal spaces just wasn't his jam, but knowing his workaholic partner, a discussion on those differences would just end up being way too long and pointless. however, he catches on to the small differences, and although it's a bit of a slow process, it all finally clicks once he's sitting in bed, looking up at sougo in awe. ]
[How many tens of times has he practiced this? It really, truly feels like a decade of practicing this until he could play every note with his eyes closed wouldn't be enough to quell the way his heart races as he moves to sit down. Ah... Please don't let his will give out on him. Not now. Not after everything it took to write his feelings into a song...]
It's a song... called "Chain of Stars." I hope you'll listen.
[Sougo can't hide the way he takes a deep breath, pausing for several long seconds before turning around around and clicking at the computer to start the music - a lovely ballad track that begins playing from the speakers, gentle and flowing. But even though Sougo looks incredibly nervous, hands faintly trembling as he turns back and places them over the piano keys, once he begins to play, his hands turn steady. And with one final, silent glance up to Tamaki, Sougo takes a deep breath and begins singing in a gentle voice.]
Until this beating heart reaches you I'll sing forevermore Embracing the melody I long to send forth Within a chain of stars
In a flurry of petals, you could say our stars aligned On the day you opened up the glistening door A whisper blooming from the footprints That you left upon my heart
A trembling voice on strings and frets You call to me, your silhouette As vibrant as the dreams I swore I'd never dare to reach
But if you'll only take my hand I'll weave this love into a melody And always hold you close...
Bound together by a chain of stars Let's continue the journey across our endless sky Shall we dance? The two of us forevermore Yes, envelop us in the crescendo of a dream When you're by my side, there's nothing more precious to me If only I could say those words... I vow to never let you go
To you, who gave me strength, I'll send my heart out on the azure wind Entwined in a chain of stars
Until the day these feelings reach you I'll send my voice out on the violet wind Entwined in a chain of stars...
[As the music stops, Sougo's fingers and voice slow along with it, and then there's silence... silence that gives way to a subtle pricking of heat behind his eyes, uncomfortably familiar enough to will down as he stares at his hands in mild disbelief. He did it... he really did it.
Staring down forever won't do him any good, however. So with the last of his courage, he finally, finally manages to look up to Tamaki and put on a gentle smile, gaze shy.]
[ tamaki remembers this feeling as if he had just experienced it for the first time. on a cliff where lanterns slowly drifted towards the sky, their faint glow had revealed the face of someone he had longed to see since they had been pulled apart. the stars themselves seemed to have descended to trace the path, and his own feet, unable to resist the pull towards it, found their way to reach for that familiar, irreplaceable warmth.
he knows that he's an idiot. on the daily, he reminds himself and others. he's painfully aware of being unable to pick up on his own sentiments and thoughts, and yet this... well, this distinct realization should have been the answer to his doubts, their fights, every single question he had asked himself right up to this very moment.
there's no way to deny it now, is there?
that reflex calls him once more, when he pushes himself away from the bed, feet shuffling, barely lifting off the ground when he makes his way around the keyboard, towards sougo-- searching, reaching for his face to lift it ever-so-gently. it feels eternal, but he makes no effort to rush it. one of his thumbs swipes right under sougo's eye, catching a mere hint of something he would hate to see, before he finally surrenders entirely and leans down, pressing their lips together into a kiss. ]
[In a way, time feels like it's moving in slow motion as Tamaki rises to his feet, wordlessly making his way across the room to bring them face to face. The closer they are, the harder it is to breathe, and Sougo is certain that his breath catches in his throat as Tamaki tilts his head up in that all too gentle manner.
Maybe, just maybe, time stops right there and then as their eyes meet... he can't say he would mind if it did. The thumb that brushes beneath his eye is far too sweet, but as Tamaki leans down and those warm lips cover his own, everything outside of leaning up and pressing in closer falls away.]
[ despite his urge to linger there forever, that kiss is short-lived. it's merely a gesture of gratitude and everything that's welling up in his chest, but having reached this point, gestures just don't cut it. there had been enough of subtleties surrounding them for the entire time they've been in each other's orbit, enough secrets and fights... tamaki knows that this one thing that might change everything from this moment onwards. still, somehow, he's never felt more ready.
with great effort, he pulls back with his hands still cupped around sougo's cheeks. he marvels, just for a moment, at everything that he holds, unable to hold back the endeared smile that tugs at the corners of his lips. something rumbles at the pit of his stomach: an entirely different thought that threatens to spill over everything else, the need to see that same person that he holds so precious disheveled and helpless under him-- maybe he's pressed for time. if only he could have been as meticulous at sougo in preparing this entire set-up.
the only thing he can offer right now is to get to the point. he's done enough running away. ]
You know... that's not fair. I'm the one who's in love with you, Sou-chan. You said you'd let me win for today.
[The kiss may end as quickly as it began, but the warmth of the broad hands that cradle his cheeks persists, and it takes every ounce of Sougo's will to not lean forward and bring them together again.
Countless hours spent writing this song had come with their fair share of worries - how Tamaki would react, more than anything, or if he'd even pick up on the message at all... But whether Sougo's feelings were properly conveyed or not, every hardship and late night of staring at his screen was worth it just to get a glimpse of Tamaki's affectionate smile, and he immediately feels weak in the face of the softhearted gaze reflected back at him.
Right now, in this fleeting moment, he can't help but think that Tamaki has never looked quite so lovely.
But then... the words Sougo was was sure he'd never hear suddenly reach his ears, and as the meaning behind them begins to sink in, his eyes slowly widen in disbelief. Tamaki is in love, in love... with him? There's no hiding the rosy hue that spreads vibrantly across Sougo's cheeks, nor the enamored look in his eyes as he simply stares up in wonder. But really... By now, after all they've been through together, is there any possible way to deny it?
The seconds seem to tick by far too slowly as silence settles between them. But finally, Sougo manages to take a shallow breath and reach up to gingerly place his hands on Tamaki's cheeks all the same, fingers still faintly trembling as timidity washes over him.]
[ silence may not be the most comfortable thing to be around right now. it crawls under tamaki's skin with insecurity and doubt of having received the wrong signals out of all this, and frankly, he was nearly about to throw up all over his partner. lucky for him though, that worry slowly comes to a halt as he reads sougo's face. small laughter bubbles out of his throat. cute.
it's not much to soothe him, tamaki thinks, but he leans into one of sougo's hand and nuzzled against it, not taking his eyes off sougo for even a fraction of a second. ]
[Ah... It's startling, really, how just that quiet, buoyant laughter is enough to make his heart flip. Tamaki's laughter has always been nice, but it's never sounded quite this wonderful before... Is this love? God. It's so hard to put on a confident face when his knees feel so weak.
But all the same, carding the fingers of his other hand back through soft hair before pulling it free, Sougo guides his touch down to Tamaki's shoulder and uses that leverage to pull himself up.]
I beg to differ.
[And with that, he tilts his head and sweetly brushes their lips together once more.]
[ once their lips meld with one another, tamaki finally releases his hold on sougo's face to move downwards. he holds him with hands splayed on top of his shoulder blades, slowly, firmly moving down to his behind as he takes the invite as a sign to let go of his inhibitions and take a small nip at his bottom lip, before tugging at it gently.
his hands could stop there. he could take a hard squeeze and feel him up and take his sweet, sweet time tracing and claiming every single inch of sougo. the blood rushing through his veins suggests him otherwise, though, and instead, he ducks down and rounds his arms right below to lift sougo off his feet. clumsily, and maybe a little too hasty, he makes his way towards sougo's bed... hopefully without tripping or breaking anything. well, in any case, maybe it'll go unnoticed- tamaki's keeping sougo's mouth occupied enough to avoid any nagging. ]
[With each movement of Tamaki's hands, Sougo's follow suit - languid touches tracing downwards from Tamaki's shoulders to the planes of his chest. It's remarkable how swiftly they ease into a pattern, a give and take that rises like the tides - an ebb and flow that they naturally fall into far more easily than Sougo ever anticipates, and the little tug at his lip only makes him tilt his head into the kiss that much more, a lave of tongue not nearly as shy as his touches.
Ah... it's truly criminal how Tamaki has learned to blindside him so easily. But in so many ways, hasn't that always been the case?
The hands at his backside hardly come as alarming, but before he's even able to register that they're moving to lift him off his feet, he's already up in Tamaki's arms with a sharp gasp that dies between their lips. Tamaki... picked him up?! It takes everything in him to not break their kiss and choke out a startled "Tamaki-kun?!," but pulling away feels far more impossible than it does unsavoury, and all Sougo can do is let out a soft noise as his arms reflexively tighten around Tamaki's torso.]
[ hopefully sougo doesn't notice the smirk that tamaki simply can't help in response to that sound- It was hard to deny the satisfaction of being the cause of sougo's excitement. and it was just as hard to contain the low growl that rumbles through his throat when smaller hands trace over his chest, loving the sensation of being spoiled by him, without anyone around to steal his thunder.
it's a silly thought to think that of someone who had just confessed through a song, but, well, he can't help being a little jealous, right? sougo was just that alluring to him, it'd be no surprise that anyone would want him.
that's neither here nor there now, though. the only thing that mattered was holding him in his arms, moving around his room until he feels the edge of the bed on his legs, and, as much as it pains him to be apart for even a fraction of a second, he tosses sougo out of their embrace and onto it with ease. with no time to waste, he follows suit, crawling over him with haste, a hand already reaching up to touch h-- ah, wait.
first things first, there's too much in the way. it's already stuffy and almost uncomfortable as is to be in this situation, so to prevent things from getting any worse with what's to come, he sits up and peels his hoodie off, haphazardly throwing it behind him (sorry) before hovering above his partner again, lips brushing against his ear as he breaks the silence in the form of a whisper ]
Sorry, Sou-chan. I don't think I'm gonna be gentle this time, either.
[How embarrassing is it that simply being whisked into Tamaki's arms is enough to make him feel the slightest bit breathless? In truth, it likely has everything to do with the way their lips are desperately locked, but Sougo doesn't pull away until he has to, already rather flushed as he glances away just long enough to realize that he's about to be tossed onto the bed.
Is he really so light that Tamaki can just throw him around?! Well... probably, but even as his back hits the mattress and Tamaki crawls over him, he would much rather attribute it to Tamaki being strong enough to pick him up. It really is cruel how unfairly attractive Tamaki looks as he hovers above him and tosses his hoodie aside, and swallowing thickly, Sougo simply can't help himself from reaching up and splaying his hands against the skin newly exposed to him.
Even without words, it's so clear from the glint in those blue eyes that there's a deeper yearning bubbling just beneath the surface of his actions, and it only fans Sougo's flames higher as he hastily returns that whispered tone.]
You know that's just gonna be worse for you, right?
[ that shouldn't come as news for sougo anyway. still, tamaki can't hold back the smug look in his eyes when he's sougo shows no resistance, keeping it well hidden by burying his face into the curve of his neck, nuzzling and taking a breath, immediately feeling sparks when he feels the perfume of sougo's shampoo. that much is already too much for him to handle-- everything in him tells him to let go of any restraint as his hands search and paw at sougo's clothes, tugging just enough to be able to slide his hands in, fingers firmly tracing at any dip and curve it can feel under them.]
[Worse? Call it his impulsivity, but as far as Sougo is concerned, it would be far worse for Tamaki to hold back to even the slightest degree. Moderation is hardly necessary - even with an unfamiliar layer of intimacy woven into every movement, it's impossible to expect anything less during Sanguis. Maybe, in the end, it's all on Sougo for easily being able to interpret being pinned down as romantic...
But before he can manage to say anything, the manner in which Tamaki's broad hands brazenly tug at his clothes and map out every curve beneath them easily catches him off guard, and the unabashed strokes of his own fingers slow to an almost timid halt.]
Do you have to point it out?
[Now isn't the time, is it?! And it hasn't been that long since they've done something like this! Honestly, it sometimes feels like Tamaki's trying to dig at his insecurities, but Sougo knows better than that... even if the concern in his tone is enough to give away the way his brow furrows in response.]
