NAME:Tamaki Yotsuba
CANON:IDOLiSH7
CANON POINT: End of part 3 in the game's main story
AGE:17
BACKGROUND:
Tamaki Yotsuba is one of the seven members that form the idol group IDOLiSH7. He and another member also take part in the duo MEZZO". His motivation to enter the entertainment industry is fueled by the disappearance of his younger sister, Aya. The two resided in a childcare facility following the passing of their ill mother, and the absence of their deadbeat father. Two years later, Aya is adopted by the president of a mid-sized company. Due to the company becoming bankrupt, however, his family disappeared overnight, taking Aya with them. Tamaki has been in the dark of her whereabouts ever since.
Determined to find her, and acquire means to sustain her on his own, Tamaki joins the entertainment industry. Initially, he has little to no actual interest in the field aside from media exposure, and he's impatient to achieve the path of fame as quickly as possible. His natural talent and charisma play in his favor when he becomes a member of IDOLiSH7 on his first audition. Those virtues come in handy a second time when he gains enough traction prior to the band's debut. As IDOLiSH7 struggles to take off, he and another member, Sougo Osaka, are merged into MEZZO", a separate group that premiere before their main one does.
Tamaki's journey in the world of IDOLiSH7 explores the way he sees the world and those around him. Always marching to the beat of his own drum and approaching everything with a brash and superficial attitude, he learns to be more aware of his surroundings and the consequences of his actions. Finding a family in IDOLiSH7, he begins to understand the importance of communicating properly with others, while still staying true to himself. Through his fans and his progression in the industry, he begins to cherish being an idol, and dedicates himself to giving his all. It's a long journey, though. As much as Tamaki means well, more often than not, it's best that he's accompanied by someone who can keep him grounded.
PERSONALITY:Growing up in a world where Aya was the only constant person, adult references and friends were only temporary presences in Tamaki’s life. Because of this, when it comes to interacting and building relationships with others, he never made any lasting bonds. Despite this difficulty, up to a certain point in his childhood, he worked to his best extent to make a positive impression on people, but by the moment he achieved that, they were already gone from his life. The defeat in having to adapt himself based on what authoritative figure he was under conditioned him to stop making an effort, taking on a simple “If you’re nice to me, I’m nice to you” philosophy in life. Dismissing the importance of listening to your elders, and having only superficial connections, his attitude also develops into surface value, straight-to-the-point interactions, building a fortress of unfriendliness around him.
Prior to being orphaned, his main priority as a big brother was to look out for Aya, as to not put a strain on his dying mother. Having said that, during his time at the facility, Tamaki never really relied on anyone outside of himself to care for him and his sister. Not having meaningful friendships with his peers never stopped Tamaki for reaching out to those in need, though, defending other kids that were victims of bullying. All in all, no matter how many walls he puts up, Tamaki isn’t someone capable of isolating himself completely. Deep down, he values affection, contact, and the positive attention of others. As long as you don’t approach him with anger, he’ll be willing to let go and lower his shield down a notch.
Upon Aya’s adoption, Tamaki loses his purpose as a protector, along with his remaining family. It leaves him lonely and surrounded by those he is diffident of, but not being picked to join a loving home condemns him to spend his days in the facility. That is until news of Aya’s disappearance reaches him, and he finds purpose once more. His resolution to be reunited once more is stronger than anything else, he’s indifferent of his duties as a member of IDOLiSH7, and quickly fluctuates based on who could benefit his goal. In more than one occasion he takes risks not only for himself but for those uninvolved with the situation around him, unaware of the consequences of his actions. A couple of examples of those risks include: Revealing his personal situation to the public eye, accepting media monopolization of it, and even considering taking empty offers of leaving his current agency in exchange of bringing him to Aya from rivaling producers. His shortcomings with socialization play a big difficulty in his first interactions with IDOLiSH7. To the other members, he initially comes off as an arrogant and immature child who only wishes to step over them for fame, while putting minimal effort and relying on his natural talents. He lacks manners with all members, even the older ones, nicknaming them upon their first meeting and brushing off politeness. Ironically enough the person he finds most difficulty with is his Sub-Unit member, Sougo, who is the first to not put up with his antics. While the others start to warm up to him and his strange behavior, his relationship with Sougo is very hostile. Tamaki loathes Sougo's nagging, and being approached to with anger trigger his defense mechanisms, so in defense, he often retorts at these reprimands by making jabs at his wealthy background and “dishonest” good boy attitude.
Regarding his personal life, he keeps everyone in the dark about pretty much anything besides growing up in an orphanage. Everything comes to light once they confront the issue of the opposing agency’s offers, which threaten the loss of both Sougo and Tamaki, as one couldn’t join the agency without the other. For the first time, Tamaki finds acceptance in his peers, who only offer to support him on his journey. Once Sougo learns more about Tamaki’s background and point of view their relationship improves, and though they still butt heads often, their differences only aid to each other’s growth throughout their personal arcs. Opening up with everyone and learning to be more vulnerable and open, Tamaki opens his perspective beyond his role as a brother and gradually takes his first steps into giving importance to his life as an idol and the effort that comes with it. Tamaki himself plays a part in the development of the other members. Observing others rather than reaching out to them, he’s very emotionally aware and perceives the changes in others. Still, because of the way he communicates, connecting what goes on in his head and explaining anything concretely is a whole other issue. Undermining his own sensibility, when he senses things he can’t quite put into words, he calls himself an idiot, asking people to tell him things up front. When others don’t open up, though, he still tries to make up with it in his own way, collecting gifts from them from crane machines, or even sharing his most precious snack.
Although Tamaki is hard to deal with, he also harbors some (depending on who deals with them) endearing qualities. He's heavily afraid of the paranormal, crying openly when being told scary stories, and sneaking into other’s beds if he can’t sleep with a night light on. On the topic of sleep, he is a very heavy sleeper, he could nap almost everywhere, and in the morning, he is the last to get up and be reactive. Still being a high school student, this makes it hard for him to get to school on time, or focus. Not being the best student, though, he spends most of his time doodling in class anyway. One of his classmates and group member's Iori is cursed with the duty of making sure he keeps up with his academic life. Tamaki's biggest obsession is cheap snacks, but especially King Pudding, along with its Mascot. His (very messy) room is actually filled with various King Pudding gadgets, along with a mix of snacks and crumbs scattered around his bed. This fixation comes from collecting stamps in food packages for freebies during his days at the orphanage. When asked for a favor, he’ll always want to be paid back in snacks, which also makes him surprisingly docile if bribed with them. Regardless of the hardships he’s endured and the work it takes to get through to him, in the end, Tamaki is lovable and goofy at his core, and being around him is always bound to keep you on your toes.
To make it very, very brief:
☆He’s hard to approach and comprehend at first sight, due to his blunt way of speech and unfriendly demeanor
☆Despite the first point, he is very fond of physical contact and praise.
☆His way of communicating is superficial, and he is terrible at expressing himself and explaining things in general. This also shows in the way he addresses others, often forgoing manners unless he’s reminded of them by someone else.
☆He’s quick to accept his mistakes and being reprimanded for his wrongdoings, as long as it’s not coupled with anger, which causes him to lash out and act defensively.
☆Although he claims to be an idiot and needing to be told things upfront, he’s actually very intuitive towards the behaviors and emotions of others.
☆Has a habit of nicknaming people upon learning their names.
☆He is very afraid of the dark and the paranormal, so he sleeps with a night light on.
☆Loves cheap snacks, especially King Pudding. This originates to him collecting stamps to exchange for items in his days at the Orphanage.
☆Because of this love for snacks, he’s very easy to bribe, and will very likely do whatever he’s asked to in exchange for them.
Tamaki is as human as can be. The same can't be said about the amount of King Pudding he can eat in one sitting.
